Coast
retailers offer a mixture of the unique and the commonplace, and there
is no shortage of places to shop. Two malls, Edgewater in Biloxi and
Singing River in Gautier, provide retail customers with traditional
department stores. Edgewater Mall recently completed a 215,000 expansion
and renovation bringing total square footage to over 1 million. The
centers offer J.C. Penney, Sears, McRae's, and Dillard's as well as
a variety of specialty stores that carry clothing, jewelry, electronics,
books and shoes.
The Coast's latest shopping addition is the 850,000 square foot Crossroads
Center, located in Gulfport at the intersection of Interstate 10 and
Highway 49. Over 15 new national retailers call Crossroads home including
Barnes & Noble, Circuit City, Pier One, Old Navy, TJ Maxx, PetsMart,
Chili's, and TGI Fridays. A new designer fashion center is in the
works for Phase II of the development and additional restaurants.
Antique shops and specialty stores are clustered in Bay St. Louis
and Pass Christian. These cities are gaining wide reputations as prime
places to find collectibles and unique gifts at reasonable prices.
Downtown Ocean Springs is known for its crafts and art shops, which
include sculpture, prints,paintings, metal work and pottery, adding
to the community's image as an art colony. The downtown also has gift
shops and an independent toy store.
Biloxi's Magnolia Mall also offers antiques, gifts and boutique clothing
in the restored old houses lining the picturesque brick walkway that
once was Water Street. Biloxi's Edgewater Village also features
numerous specialty stores, Books-A-Million, and ToysR Us are right
across from Edgewater Mall. In addition, several specialty shopping
centers are located along Courthouse Road in Gulfport.
Outlet
mall shoppers will want to try Prime Outlets at Gulfport (formerly
Gulfport Factory Shops), located at the southwest corner of I-10 and
Highway 49. They currently offer 66 stores and 275,000 square feet
of retail space with children's playgrounds and a wonderful Food Court.
Completion of Phase II, and Phase III currently in the planning stages,
will bring the total project to 448,000 square feet of shopping space.
Stein Mart opened their doors in May '96 in Biloxi at the busy intersection
of Beauvoir Road and Pass Road.
Most of the big
discounters - Wal-Mart Superstore (200,000 square feet), Sam's Wholesale
Club, Cowboy Maloney's, Lowe's Superstore, Rex, Hudson's Salvage,
West Superstore, Home Depot (131,500 square feet) -- are located throughout
the area. Wal-Mart also has stores in Biloxi, Ocean Springs, Pascagoula
and Waveland. Two new Super Walmarts are also open in D'Iberville
and Ocean Springs, and Waveland. K-Mart has stores in Long Beach,
D'Iberville, Gulfport and Waveland. |
